UX Case Study
UX Case Study
Old Homepage
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is Indiaβs largest social security organization, serving 65+ crore active members. Despite its significance, the existing website was outdated, clunky, and far from user-friendly.
I took on the challenge to reimagine the EPFO homepage with a modern, minimal, and mobile-first UX approach to ensure access to vital government services was fast, intuitive, and inclusive.
The official EPFO website had:
β A cluttered interface with too many options at once
β No mobile-first design strategy
β Poor accessibility and visual hierarchy
β Inefficient user flows for common actions
To transform the EPFO homepage into a seamless digital experience that empowers citizens to easily access government services β with clarity, speed, and trust.
Redesigned Homepage (Desktop + Mobile)
β Mobile and Desktop versions of the homepage with:
β Simplified navigation (segmented by user type)
β Quick access to key portals (UAN, KYC, e-Passbook, etc.)
β Highlighted EPFO statistics for user trust
β Sticky header with essential links like Contact, Feedback, and Language switcher
β Clean CTA-based services: Member, Employer, and Pensioner
I analyzed the current EPFO site for usability issues using:
Heuristic evaluation β
Accessibility checks (color contrast, ARIA) β
Scroll-depth and click heatmap simulation β
π What I found:
Homepage had over 60+ clickable links right at the top
Dropdown menus made it hard to scan or select key actions
Font sizes and spacing were not mobile-friendly
Quick interviews + community forums gave insight:
Most users just wanted UAN, Passbook, and KYC portals
90% accessed the site via mobile phones
Senior users struggled with navigation and long scrolls
Uses low-end Android phone
Checks PF balance once a month
Doesnβt understand complicated tech terms
Needs direct access to Passbook, UAN login, and balance
Uses desktop daily
Needs quick Employer logins & e-return tools
Often guides others on EPFO usage.
Minimal, modern UI β
Fully responsive (mobile-first tested) β
Dark/light mode ready β
WCAG 2.1 accessibility improvements β
β¨ Improved clarity and usability β¨ Optimized for mobile-first users β¨ Simplified navigation and actions β¨ Increased accessibility (ADA-compliant colors + contrast).
Government websites are the face of digital trust. A better design doesnβt just mean good looks β it means empowerment at scale. With this redesign, I aimed to make India's social security system more accessible, transparent, and user-first.
